An American Story-Tale

Gather round, ladies & gents & girls & boys, for today’s story-tale:

As a kid, I remember when we pledge allegiance to the flag. It was a ritual, which seemed right at the time. I remember our choir (I forget what age) sang a song, titled Freedom Isn’t Free. I remember the hook, you’ve got to pay the price, you’ve got to sacrifice, for your liberty! Don’t believe me? I googled it, so here it is. And, yes, we used to pray, too.

I wasn’t a patriot, but I understood that government was important and being a “good American citizen” was important. We were taught what was right and wrong. Give a hoot, don’t pollute. Never be a dirty bird. Civic duty mattered. I rocked with the Schoolhouse. I knew that a bill had to work hard to become a law.

In all of that learning, and through the good — and, in spite of the bad — government antics, would have never thought this would be what democracy looked like as an adult. A shameful farce. This Black man — who is dealing with mental illness & marital/family issues — would of course want to run to be president of the United States of America. Naturally, that falls on the list of to-dos.

Many influencers will influence the influencers, but, what would prompt this, type of manipulation and dysfunction-with or without a pandemic upheaving this nation. And, of course, the current president looks at millions of sick people & 160,000 dead (and the numbers keep growing), and thinks this is the perfect time to golf.

Those who swore on bibles to defend our nation disgrace — and their bibles — daily. And, in this pandemic, some elected officials will betray their constituents & demand workers return to their desks. They endanger future constituents by demanding they return to school.

And, if that’s not enough the ruling party is welcoming foreign help to distort and diminish the democracy that the world envied — once. Others see voter suppression is the best way to win.

So, in the midst of racial, social and pandemic strife, someone thought it a good idea to encourage a Black man to be the political disrupter — as if an already tarnished process is made worse before the world.

Some people are willingly dismantling the very process that people fought and died to protect. The song we sang, as respectful chorus members, is meaningless today. The “dragon energy” (whatever that is) is in full effect, it seems. into the disruption, because the myriad shenanigans of an unfit president/sideshow isn’t complete without a rapper.

We are witnessing unimaginable foolishness in the nation where people have risked lives to get to, so they can breathe free. Isn’t it ironic that the freedom now requires a mask to breath freely?

Yes, the place where people came, with their hopes and dreams, has multiple nightmares going at the same time. And, just like those weird dreams that you wake from and say, “what did I eat or watch, that created that weird melange of story lines & melded characters?” As the world turns our one life to live, during these days of our lives, we see the dark shadows and the incessant scandals can put us all in a general hospital.

Social media is a tool that stirs this crazy story-tale. I think part of the meal that produced this “nightmare while awake” included American pie for dessert. The church has even seemed to enjoy a slice too. Check with Jerry Falwell, Jr. for details.

Unfortunately, The world bought the lie that came with the pie. And, it’s giving those of us with a brain and a moral compass indigestion.

Still, please vote.
